The day is finally here! You have delivered the love of your life and now you want to remember all the tiny details (because it goes by so fast!). Preparing for your newborn session will help you get the most our of your session time. Preparing for your session is KEY! Having your ideas, colors, theme, style prepared ahead of time will get you the most out of your time.

Here are some valuable insights I have acquired over the years while capturing images of newborns:

Tip #1 - Book before you deliver!

Securing a booking prior to delivery guarantees a confirmed session date. Newborns are most photogenic when they are under 18 days old; I aim to schedule sessions around the 10-day mark.

Tip #2 - Plan your style

Now that you have booked your newborn session it's time to pick the fun stuff! If there a color you love (or don't love) - let me know! Do you want a neutral colored session, bright and colorful session or a traditional pastel session? Do you want to incorporate a nursery theme, profession or even a sports team that you love? Is there a prop that I have used that you would like in your session? By booking ahead of time I will have time or order anything that I don't already have to make your final gallery exactly what you want!

Tip #3 - Make it personal

If you have a family heirloom or any personal item you want to include in your session, please feel free to inform me! I enjoy incorporating these special touches for my clients!

Tip #4 - A fed baby is a happy baby

I like to start my sessions with a milk drunk baby! Newborns sleep better if they are fed and content. Occasionally, posing a newborn will wake them up, and I try to sooth baby back to sleep on the posing table. If I know baby is fully fed, I know I can get them to relax back to sleep, usually in just a few seconds!

Tip #5 - Siblings

Capturing photos of newborns with their siblings can be quite challenging, especially when the siblings are toddlers. Parents can help prepare toddlers for the photo session by allowing them to hold and cuddle the baby at home. Often, parents hope for the perfect sibling portrait, but it can be tricky when the toddler has never interacted with the newborn until the studio session. This lack of familiarity makes it hard to pose the toddler with the newborn in an unfamiliar environment. It is highly recommended to practice at home beforehand if you have a toddler-aged sibling – this preparation can significantly improve the outcome of the photo session.

Time to shoot!
